Overdentures (Snap-on Dentures) FAQs

If you’re missing all of your teeth, you may be considering dentures as a replacement option. After all, dentures have been used for centuries and are one of the cheapest ways to quickly restore your smile. While traditional dentures can be effective, they can also be uncomfortable and prone to slipping and limited meal choices, not to mention changes in the way you talk. Luckily, there is a solution – overdentures, also known as

snap denture. At ARCHPOINT Implant Dentistry in DFW, our Dallas and Ft. Worth practices have on-site specialists who are experts in dental implant therapy, providing a wide range of restorative choices you won’t find at a typical dental office.

If you’re new to the idea of overdentures or “clip-on” implant dentures, here are some common questions you’ll probably want to ask:

What are overdentures?

Overdentures are a type of removable denture that snaps onto dental implants. Unlike traditional dentures that rest on the gums, overdentures provide a secure and stable fit that prevents slipping and sliding. They essentially look like a traditional full denture, but there are special attachments underneath the “plate” that will clip onto implants.

How do implant stabilized dentures work?

Implant-supported overdentures work by attaching to anywhere from 2-4 dental implants placed in your mouth. Since the prosthesis is removable, it does not need additional support from several implants. Rather, the implants offer additional reinforcement throughout the day.

The implants serve as a stable base for the denture, which snaps on and off as needed. This allows you to easily remove their dentures for cleaning and maintenance the same way you would a conventional design.

In certain instances, newer dentures may be able to be retrofitted to fit on top of dental implants. That way, you’re not entirely replacing a brand new denture if you decide to convert it into a snap-on design.

Are overdentures more comfortable than traditional dentures?

Yes, overdentures are generally more comfortable than traditional dentures because they provide a more secure and stable fit throughout the day. Traditional dentures rest on the gums, which can cause discomfort and irritation, especially when you have a thin bone ridge or the dentures “rock” when you’re wearing them. Overdentures attach to dental implants, which prevents slipping and shifting whenever you’re wearing them. Plus, no messy adhesives or pastes are needed because the prosthesis clips into place.

Are overdentures better than traditional dentures?

Whether overdentures are better than traditional dentures depends on the individual patient’s needs and preferences. For our DFW patients who are looking for a more secure and stable fit from their dentures, overdentures are often a better choice. However, there is a bit more investment needed up front, as at least two dental implants will need to be installed for the prosthesis to function properly. Thankfully, this approach is quite affordable and a nice upgrade for anyone considering an implant-supported prosthesis.

How many implants are needed for snap-on dentures?

The number of implants needed for overdentures depends on the individual patient’s needs and the type of denture being used. In general, patients need at least two implants to support an overdenture. However, some patients may require as many as four implants for added stability. Since the prosthesis is removable, we have more flexibility as to where your implants can be installed. This means we can still use fewer implants because each one is placed at a strategic point to offer maximum hold under the overdenture.

How do I care for my overdentures?

Caring for implant-supported dentures is nearly identical to the home care routine for traditional dentures. Patients should remove their dentures daily for cleaning and maintenance. This includes brushing them with a soft-bristled brush and denture cleaner, as well as cleaning the dental implants and any attachments. Soak your denture overnight and then brush it clean the next morning before putting it back in your mouth. We recommend seeing a dentist regularly for check-ups and adjustments, as the locators may occasionally need to be replaced (the parts that allow the denture to “snap” onto the corresponding implants.)

What are the benefits of overdentures?

Some of the many benefits of overdentures include:

  • Improved comfort and stability on a day-to-day basis
  • Better ability to eat and speak since the denture doesn’t slip out of place
  • Improved self-confidence around other people
  • Enhanced bone health and preservation
  • More food options at mealtime since the dentures offer additional reinforcement

Do overdentures require surgery?

Yes, overdentures require a minimally invasive surgical procedure to place the dental implants into the bone. However, this is typically a minor process that is performed under local anesthesia with minimal discomfort. In some cases, overdentures can be placed immediately instead of having to wait for your implants to integrate. Your exact treatment plan process will be unique to your particular circumstances, so be sure to work with specialistS like the team at ARCHPOINT, as we offer an extensive menu of treatment approaches.

Are overdentures more expensive than traditional dentures?

Yes, because they require dental implants to hold them in place. Adding the cost of 2-4 implants to your restorative procedure will increase the amount you pay to get dentures. However, the long-term benefits of overdentures, including improved comfort and stability, can make them a worthwhile investment for many patients.

Our treatment coordinators will work with your insurance company, if applicable, to help you utilize any coverage that’s available toward the cost of an implant denture. We also offer flexible payment plan options so that you can start treatment at any time. Most financing plans are available with 0% or low interest rates and can be combined with your existing insurance coverage, if applicable.
