The well-known surrealist Catalan painter, Salvador Dalí was born within this town. There is a substantial Dalí Theatre and Museum designed by Dali and a lot of visitors throng this place. History

The origin for the name in the town would be the word Ficaris that has Visigoth origins. King James I of Aragon had offered legal forum (fuero in Spanish) inside the year 1267; having said that, Hugo IV set fire towards the town after 4 years. This town was bombed repetitively by rebels due to its loyalty towards the Republican Government in the course of the Spanish civil war. The economic recovery of this town began in 1950s and this was mostly due to tourism.
