Joint Reconstruction and Join Replacement - What Do You Should Know

Image for post

Joint pain is among the common orthopedic problems that people face. They are often seen in the elderly. However, young adults are also experiencing the same these days. The reason behind this is a poor lifestyle and lack of self-care.

Well, if the joint pain is caused by a severe issue and does not improve with conventional treatments, surgery is the answer. There are two types of joint surgeries that are commonly performed depending on the severity of the condition i.e., joint replacement and joint reconstruction. This is what we will be discussing in the post.

What is Joint Reconstruction?

Joint reconstruction is a procedure that is performed to repair minor damage to muscles, ligaments, and tendons. Reconstruction surgery can provide temporary relief to a permanent solution for various joint disorders. However, there are certain factors that are considered before deciding whether joint reconstruction is feasible or not.

The goal of reconstruction surgery is to restore joint function and help improve the quality of life. Joint reconstruction surgery is often the choice unless the damage is beyond repair. In this surgery, the surgeon replaces torn/damaged cartilage or ligament with a tissue graft. Some procedures that may need joint reconstruction include:

  • Deformity correction
  • Patellar realignment
  • Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury
  • Cartilage transplant
  • Multi-ligament reconstruction in the knee

What is Joint Replacement?

Joint replacement is among the most performed orthopedic surgeries. Healthcare service providers often suggest replacement surgery for the elderly as joint problems are common in them. Aging is the major factor in this. If we talk about joint replacement in young adults, then the need for this arises because of severe accidents where the joint is damaged so badly that it cannot be repaired.

Joint replacement surgery is when the surgeon removes the entire joint and places an implant. The type of implant used depends on the type of joint and the severity of the damage. Here, two types of joint replacement surgeries are there:

Partial joint replacement

As the name suggests, partial joint replacement is where only a portion of the joint is damaged, and the surgeon will replace that part with an implant made for that joint.

Total joint replacement

Total joint replacement is when there is severe damage to the joint and hence, the surgeon will replace it with an artificial joint, known as a prosthesis. One of the conditions that may demand total joint replacement is arthritis.

A joint replacement surgery provides long-term relief from the painful symptoms associated with the condition. A joint prosthesis may last for as long as 10 years or even more. However, the life of an artificial joint also depends on how the patient takes care of and follows instructions given by the surgeon.
