Plot:

Warrior Nun is based on Ben Dunn's comic series (manga novels), and it tells the story of Ava Silva, a teenage orphan who wakes up in a morgue with superpowers, one of which makes her the chosen one – the halo bearer for a hidden society of demon hunting nuns. But does she want to be the chosen one, or will this 'calling' get the best of her, or is it even a calling?

Review:

In the contemporary context of the world as we know it, mythology collides with theology and science. Add in the fact that the story is about a secret order of women fighters known as the Order of the Cruciform Sword (OCS), which has existed for centuries since the first crusade, and you have a terrific storyline for an action-packed series.

The first (of a total of ten) episode looks promising, as it puts you right in the heart of the action. Shannon, the sect's halo bearer, is wounded by the single thing capable of injuring her – a bluish metal known as divinium. Before the demons take it from them, her squad is compelled to remove the sacred halo from her back and move it to the next in line.

Sister Lilith, the next in line, is too preoccupied with fighting to accept the halo. This halo is hidden on the rear of a dead cadaver in a mortuary by another nun. This body belongs to Ava Silva, an orphan who has spent the last 11 years of her life confined to a bed.

Ava (Alba Baptista), she's resurrected as the chosen halo bearer for a sect she's going to uncover. The girl, on the other hand, has no desire to lead this group of warrior nuns on this quest. She wants to live her life and do all of the things she hasn't been able to do in the past. The fact that she now has superhuman abilities is a plus. The narrative soon begins to lose its punch as Ava delivers a series of monologues depicting the chaos she encounters at every turn.

Why has Ava been chosen?

This is a question that haunts not only Ava but also the many other better equipped and capable nuns, as well as you, the viewer, at some time. There is a real attempt at humor - most likely to lighten the mood or remain 'cool,' but some of the dialogues during these attempts may make you wince.

The remainder of the warrior nuns are what makes the story work — each is a talented combatant, and this is where the action happens. The names of the episodes are also effective. Each is the title of a Bible chapter and verse, emphasizing the importance of what is written in the Bible to Ava's character in the show.

However, Adrien's story in the holy book exposes a completely different truth, which relates to the character in the play once more. The CGI utilized to show the demons may not work in this case. What doesn't work is the fact that the tale takes a while to get going.

If you can get through the first few episodes, you'll find that this is a story with characters that grow on you. However, to make up for the sluggish start to the plot, there are some fantastic settings to keep you company, as well as excellent cinematography.

Be forewarned about the season's conclusion. It's a bit abrupt. In reality, it terminates in the middle of the finale scene's conflict. As a result, it adds to the numerous loose ends that set the stage for the upcoming season.
